The 2006 Interflora Conference on Daydream Island welcomed internationally renowned Japanese Floral Designer Yoko Takahashi who gave us a small insight into the mystery of Japanese design. Yoko produced pieces of such detail and intricacy that even the most patient amongst us marvelled. She captivated the audience with tales describing her inspiration and homeland environment. The culmination of her demonstration was a design typically produced for a Japanese wedding but on this evening, instead of bringing blessings for the Bride and Groom, Yoko hoped it brought rain to our dry country. This was just one heartfelt gesture from an amazing person.
The first photo is woven Mitsuhiki, a paper covered fine wire. It took 2 days to weave the structure. The flowers were tucked into test tubes so the two days were not wasted as the flowers can be replenished. In the background is a pretty spring arrangement within a hand constructed chicken wire basket with torn lotus leaves lining it.
Design 2 is a wire structure covered with hand made Japanese paper. Roses and foliage peek out the top and draped Mitsuhiki complete the design.
Design 3 is a close up of another hand made wire basket with more hand made Japanese paper lining. Anthuriums and Hypericum berries peek above the basket and this time red Mitsuhiki wire is draped down the sides.
